The Antica Strada Regina, an
ancient road probably built by
the Romans, was an important
connection between the south
and north side of the Alps,
the territory of Como and Milano and the transalpine
regions. It was also used by the medieval pilgrims on
their way to Rome, and for trading purposes until the
end of the 18th century, when the current lake road was
built. We will hike along a well conserved stretch of this
antique road: from Menaggio, along the slopes of Sasso
Rancio to the characteristic village Rezzonico, with
splendid views of Como Lake.
Meeting point: 8:10am at Milano Centrale Railway
Station, at the front of the platform of Regional train 2816
(headed to Tirano). At 8:20am, train to Varenna-Esino (arr.
9:24am). At 9:50am, boat to Menaggio (arr. 10:05am)
Hike: Menaggio (200 m), Nobiallo (205 m), Sasso Rancio
(348 m), Rezzonico (200 m)

To come back:
4:49pm bus from
Rezzonico to Colico
FS (arr. 5:40pm).
At 6:15pm train to
Milano Centrale (arr. 7:40pm).
Equipment: daily backpack, hiking boots or good
running shoes, trekking poles (if you use them),
comfortable clothes in layers, rain jacket, packed lunch, 1
liter bottle of water (canteen), identity card
Cost: €25 (includes insurance, does not include train,
boat and bus tickets)
Ticket costs: train Milano/Varenna-Esino €7.40, train
Colico/Milano €8, bus €3.50. Or better yet, buy the “Io
