Due to popular demand, Benvenuto has organized a
second viewing of this prestigious project dedicated
to Pablo Picasso, in collaboration with the National
Museum Picasso and the National Museum of
Immigration History, both in Paris.
Based on years of new research, the exhibition showcases
over 80 works—including paintings, sculptures,
drawings, prints, photographs and archive documents—
which have been carefully selected so that we can take a
look at Picasso and his art from an unprecedented point
of view.
The exhibition offers a reflection on the themes of
hospitality, immigration, and the relationship with the
other, by highlighting how the condition of being an
eternal foreigner forged Picasso’s identity.
Born in Spain in 1881, Picasso settled in Paris in
1904. In spite of France becoming his residence, his
fame spreading beyond national borders and receiving
honorary status in 1948, the artist was refused French
citizenship.
According to the new narrative, Picasso suffered from not
feeling at home in Paris at the beginning of the twentieth
century—a cosmopolitan city, supposedly welcoming
towards foreign artists.
It was precisely the issues of immigration and
nationalism—still highly topical in this day and age—
that shaped Picasso’s aesthetic and politics, making him
an artist very much ahead of his time.
